Practical tips for executives for balanced living

Define your personal mission. See pages 9 and 10 of Seven Steps to Lasting Happiness.

  • Prepare a family mission statement. Involve all family members in this process.
  • Set personal and family goals for health and fitness, reading, bonding, meditation, etc.
  • Focus on the solution, not on the problem. Explore creative solutions with outside-the-box thinking. Remember that for every problem, there are at least 21 solutions.
  • Do two meaningful activities at the same time. For example, combine exercise with building relationships by taking a brisk walk with your spouse or business colleague. Listen to the inspiring CD 7 Steps to Lasting Happiness or other CDs while driving to work.
  • Focus your most significant time on your most important activities. Eliminate the non-essentials. Remember that less is more.>
  • Schedule your priorities. Schedule weekly one-to-one meetings with your spouse, each of your children (if applicable), and work colleagues.
  • Eat with your family once a day. Make this a family ritual and an enjoyable time for sharing and communicating.
  • Value diversity. Synergy happens from differences.
  • Try to remain in the big picture by referring to your personal mission, family mission, and corporate mission. Do not get caught up in the small stuff.
  • Prepare a weekly time budget of where you want to spend your time. See page 83 of Seven Steps to Lasting Happiness for an example. Keep track of your time for a week to see how you are actually spending your time. Record your insights in your journal.
  • Try 20:20:20 (meditate, exercise and read) in the early morning. Start the day with the big stuff!
  • Live one day at a time. Treat each day as the most important day of your life.
